Some locust and ash trees have V-shaped forks instead of a normal U shape.  The bark is forced inside the tree, resulting in a weakly attached branch that is prone to splitting.

Discount nurseries often sell Purple Robe Locusts with defective V-shaped forks.  They will split apart in a wind storm.  Select only healthy, correctly formed trees.
